Gourmet Cheese Steak & Pizza Co. (Melbourne)

Sitting quietly at the corner of Babcock and Nasa Blvd, is a very unassuming pizza restaurant. Why is it unassuming? Well, it's a Cheese Steak joint. That's right Gourmet Cheese Steak & Pizza Co. Their menu runs the gamut of cheese steaks, burgers, and pizzas. We of course were there for the pizza. We aren't The Pepperoni Report for nothing. Other than the tall yellow sign with red lettering at the side of the road, there is little to tell you that you can get a pizza inside. Once you enter, you are greeted by a friendly staff that is ready to take your order. A brick oven resides just behind the counter that lets you know, they are definitely in the pizza game.

The inside is clean but a bit dated. We don't believe the interior has changed much since it opened as what ever it was originally. You get a healthy 70's vibe coming from the decor. A very odd choice for decorations are pictures of parrots, space shuttles and pizza hanging on the walls. This place has character. It's a little divey, but that is only because of it's age.  Our server greeted us and told us about their specials, but we were there for only one thing.

That's right, a large pepperoni pizza. This was a good looking pie, and it came out fast and hot. Steam was rising from that cheesy pepperoni goodness. With your first bite, you are grabbed by the creaminess of the cheese. It is smooth and has a fantastic mouthfeel to it. The mozzarella is a bit overpowering due to the sauce being very thin. The pepperoni was mild with a little tang to it. You are left feeling that this is an okay pizza until you hit that crust. This crust is the crucial star in this pie. It is light and fluffy with a subtle crunch to it. It has a wonderful flavor that you could eat just the crust on it's own if you wanted to. We had fantasies of dipping it in marinara or a light garlic butter sauce. The mozzarella and the crust save this pizza from being just ordinary. If you want to see our immediate reactions to this pizza, please watch the video below.

The dining and kitchen area are clear, but the bathrooms need a little TLC. The thin sauce and mild pepperoni are greatly lifted by the mozzarella and crust on this pizza, and because of that we can only give Gourmet Cheese Steak & Pizza Co. a 4. If you ever find yourself in the area of Babcock and Nasa in Melbourne, give Gourmet a try.
