Slices (Melbourne)

Tucked into the corner of a newish strip mall on Eau Gallie Blvd, sits a pizza joint, where the only thing they put before pizza, is family. It is evident when you walk in, that you are going to be in for a comfortable time. With carpeted floors, and little positive sayings on the walls, this is a place where you are welcome.

We were greeted as soon as we walked in the door by the owner, Will. A very interesting guy, that will talk to you about pizza any time you want. He runs Slices with the rest of his family, which is where that feeling of family comes from. Clean tables sit in a large dining area where you walk up to the counter to order. Once you order and get your drinks either from a cooler for bottles or a soda fountain for fountain drinks. Take a seat, and it is just a short wait until your pizza arrives.

They take great care in how they treat their customers. Right before the pizza comes out, one of the staff will come out with paper place matts and the stand for the side of the table that the pizza will rest on. If you want to time it from that point, it is only a few minutes before your pie comes out. Overall time is just around the 10 minute mark.

Look at that pizza. It's a beauty. That's the first thing that strikes you, but then you are instantly hit by the second thing, and that is the smell. It's that smell that takes you back to childhood, when you walked into a pizzeria for the first time. When you take that first bite, it is a little surprising, not because it is bad, but because it is different. It all comes down to the the sauce. It isn't your typical marinara. They do a wet sauce similar to Napoli style pizzas, and it really makes a difference. Fresh tomato taste, with small chunks of tomato scattered about the pie, with a wonderful creamy cheese that has a nice snap when you bite into it. Then you begin to notice the all beef pepperoni which has a light saltiness to it that cuts the mild sweetness of the sauce. Then there is the crust. This crust deserves a blog of it's own, but we will fit it all in here.

The crust is light and crispy, and maintains it's crunch throughout your meal. As it cools, it begins to remind you of a cracker not in that it is hard and flavorless, but in that the crunch is exactly like that cracker crunch. It does not cool and get chewy and tough. Speaking of cooling down, let's talk about how this pizza transforms as it cools. A whole different set of flavors begin to emerge as it cools. More tomato flavor comes from that delightful sauce, and the pepperoni gets a little kick to it. Not a lot, but just enough to let you know that it's there. The mozzarella is the only thing that doesn't change. It has that same milky and creamy flavor that it had from the start, and maintains that wonderful snap.

With a clean, family, friendly environment, owners and staff that are passionate about pizza, and a wonderfully tasty pizza, we give Slices our highest rating. That's right 5 dancing pepperoni. We can't give it anything less, and we highly recommend you give them a try.

Reheat Update: Guy here I stole all the pizza from Other Guy, so I'm taking charge of the Reheat Update. I reheated the left over pepperoni pizza in a toaster oven set at 450 degrees for 10-12 minutes. It came out hot with a crispiness to the crust while maintaining the delicious flavor. I will caution that the the pepperoni slices came out slightly greasy. We were also given a Grandma slice that I reheated, and it was delicious as well. It didn't show any signs of grease as the pepperoni did. Since I don't eat vegetables, I gave the vegetarian slices to my wife. She heated them in an air fryer set at 400 for 7 minutes, she said that they came out delicious and had a wonderful crispy crust.
